Studies on lysogenesis. II. The effect of temperature on the lysogenization of Shigella dysenteriae with phage P1.

چکیده
Sensitive bacteria, when infected with a temperate phage, either lyse or become lysogenic. With the temperate phage Pl and its host Shigella dysenteriae, the outcome of infection is affected strikingly by temperature. The discovery of this temperature effect has allowed us to study some features of the lysogenization process; these will be described in this paper. The definitions of certain terms and a general discussion of the problems involved in the study of lysogenesis were given in a previous paper (Bertani, 1953a; see also Benzer et al., 1950).

Characterization of a Shiga toxin-encoding temperate bacteriophage of Shigella sonnei.
A Shiga toxin (Stx)-encoding temperate bacteriophage of Shigella sonnei strain CB7888 was investigated for its morphology, DNA similarity, host range, and lysogenization in Shigella and Escherichia coli strains. Phage 7888 formed plaques on a broad spectrum of Shigella strains belonging to different species and serotypes, including Stx-producing Shigella dysenteriae type 1. With E. coli, only s...
متن کاملTransduction by Bacteriophage P1: Abnormal Phage Function of the Transducing Particles.
Transduction by bacteriophage, as first described in Salmonella,' is the phagemediated transfer of any one of a number of genetic traits from one bacterial cell to another. The frequency of genetic transfer is quite low, 1: 105-1:108 per infecting phage particle for any one trait. Further study of this phenomenon both in Salmonella and in the coli-dysentery bacteria,2'3. 4, 5 6 showed that clos...
متن کاملAbortive infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens with coliphage P1.
In the course of attempts to effect intergeneric transduction by means of coliphage P1 (Bertani, J. Bacteriol. 62:293, 1951; Lennox, Virology 1:190, 1955), we observed that this phage can attack and kill many strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens. Bacterial killing is not accompanied by phage multiplication. Lysates of phage Plkc or its mutant Plkc vir, grown on either Shige...
متن کاملDetermining the antibacterial effect of ZnO nanoparticle against the pathogenic bacterium, Shigella dysenteriae (type 1)
The nanomaterials have important application in different field of science such as biology and pharmacology, which draws the attention of biologists towards this field of study more than before. As the worldwide mortality rate is high due to the pathogens and especially because of the bacteria associated dysenteriae and the antibacterial effect of metal nanoparticles is well known from centurie...
متن کاملProbiotic Bifidobacterium Lactis Bacteria Inhibit the Invasion Phenotype of Shigella Dysenteriae Induced By Invasion Plasmid Antigen C
Background and Aims: Shigellosis is an acute gastroenteritis and Invasion plasmid antigen C (IpaC) is the first effector protein for Shigella invasion of intestinal cells. Among lactic acid bacteria, Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) has received increasing attention for protection of a potential host against gastrointestinal infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory ...
